Robert Moses: What an Asshole

Robert Moses loved bridges, but for various reasons lacked the political influence to get one of his pet projects built. So what did he do? He took over the competing agency and sacked his adversary:

In 1946, the [New York City] Tunnel Authority was merged with (rather, taken over by) the Triborough Bridge Authority, forming the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority, whereupon [chief engineer Ole] Singstad was fired, and the incomplete Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel was finished to Moses’s specifications. This new design leaked, and the TBTA fixed the leaks by reverting to Singstad’s original design.
